Tear It Down And Build It Up Again

Little house on Maple Street built with these two hands
Forty years ago almost to the day
Didn’t do the best job of following the plan
Split some boards and bent some nails along the way
Thank God our mistakes can be forgiven
And livin’ perfect ain’t the point of livin’
Tear it down and build it up again
Let it fall apart now and then
Learn to surrender and make room for something better
Tear it down and build it up again
The first night in this house we slept right on the floor
Because the moving truck broke down two miles away
Shared my jacket as a pillow and we kept each other warm
Man, I tear up when I think about those days
Patchin’ up our jeans and cuttin’ coupons
Testin’ out the hammock with our boots on
Tear it down and build it up again
Let it fall apart now and then
Learn to surrender and make room for something better
Tear it down and build it up again
These walls were always more than just nails and 2x4s
Our years right here meant so much to me
Rest my hand in yours as we’re walkin’ out the door
Time to say goodbye to Maple Street
